Alors que ces artistes se produisaient aussi bien à l'église que dans les clubs, les chansons présentées ici ne sont pas vraiment sacrées, ni complètement laïques... Ces titres capturent l'essence d'un gospel qui repose sur une approche intense, émouvante, honnête, sans fioriture, pieuse, mais en aucun cas doctrinaire. The time for peace is now nous offre le meilleur de cette scène singulière : un gospel qui navigue entre soul, funk & r&b, découlant notamment de l'impact culturel et commercial des légendaires Staple Singers. Les chansons et les chanteurs de cette compilation sont influencés par un mélange enivrant de The Mighty Clouds of Joy et Sly and the Family Stone. Alors qu'ils tentaient désespérément d'attirer l'attention des labels majeurs, ces artistes ont prospéré au sein de leurs scènes locales, certains étant même toujours actifs.
