Mais quand elle a décidé de se lancer dans une carrière professionnelle, elle s’est retrouvée chanteuse jazz et R&B au sein des King Fleming Four. A la fin de l’année 1956, à côté de sa collaboration avec le quartet, elle démarra une carrière solo, annoncée sur les affiches comme Angel Voice. Dans la foulée, en 1957, elle fit ses débuts discographiques sur le label King. « This Is Lorez » la présente avec une pointe de sophistication dans les arrangements, la flûte ou le hautbois se mariant à merveille avec son timbre et son l’expressivité de son interprétation. L’accueil enthousiaste de la critique conduisit le label à lui proposer un deuxième enregistrement la même année. Ce fut « Lorez Sings Prez », consacré à des thèmes sur lesquels Lester Young s’était illustré. Elle s’attacha à l’essence de chaque chanson, à son âme.
